Week 5 - Progress 3: Just an Inch

I didn't make a lot of progress today, but I also spent my entire afternoon job-hunting... on foot. Suffice to say, I was wiped out by the time I collapsed into the chair at my desk. But I did accomplish some background work, including the tedious straight-line making. tomorrow I hope to at least get the lady on the couch done. Maybe work on the cityscape, but it'll be like the town in the background of Week 2; just building outlines.

Also, in response to Kessie's question, it's an office. A library, however, would be awesome. I'm tempted to draw a totally random scene in a library sometime now. Perhaps save that for a digital drawing, considering all those shelves and books I'd need to worry about.

Music: None, though I am watching "Red Cliff"

Week 5 - Progress 2: Embarking on Insanity

While I did start on this part last night, I ended up erasing the entire thing and trying again this morning, so I guess it didn't count too much. Either that or it helped me get all the mistakes out of my system. I'm hoping for the latter.

This one's going to be an even bigger pain than last week because I decided to go all the way to crazy-town and add furniture and a cityscape through the windows. What is wrong with me?

Week 5 - Progress 1: Begin Again

Even though I did start on the actual drawing today (working on it between typing, in fact), I decided that I rather like starting with the very beginning of my process. It shows how I think, I suppose, though that's not necessarily a healthy thing for everyone else to see.

This week is fan art, and traditional media again. Also it'll be containing a perspective-using background again. Because I'm a masochist in that way, I suppose. The two characters are from the obscure anime movie/manga I love called Spriggan. They're... wrestling. Or something. Some guy thing. They will be fully clothed, I just don't bother with those things while mapping out poses.

For those not familiar, yes, the guy who is "losing" is tugging on the ponytail of the guy who is "winning".

Music: None, just a quick couple of doodles

Week 4 - Progress 6: Done!

And finally done with this week's art, and on the last day, even! Having more work hours now and being home last weekend when the "Week" started probably had a lot to do with it. But here it is, in all its completed glory (if you can call it that).

I think I might have had a lot more to say in mind, but I certainly can't remember any of it right now. I'm a bit distracted thinking about the movies I'm going to watch to celebrate it being Friday night.

Note to self: These colors don't work for Duke's sword. Find something else next time.

Music: None, really. Was watching Sailor Moon episodes on YouTube.

Week 4 - Progress 5: Closing In

Thank you, Kessie, for pointing out the perspective error on the paintings (that's what they are)! I covered it with white out and fixed it, but since they'll now be impossible to color over with marker, I'm going to cut out paper shapes from another source and paste them over. Like Photoshop, but with scissors and glue!

I started coloring, and pretty much anything left blank are things that I didn't know what color to use on. Except the walls. They're staying white.

His sword sheath I'm considering brown for, but decided to hold off and see if I got a better idea. His gloves will either be white or brown like his boots. The rug he's on I'm currently debating between light purple or the same green as his eyes. His sword I'm considering dark green/turquoise and purple for, but am currently unsure. If it helps, the country he's from has dark blue and purple as their "theme" colors.

Week 4 - Progress 4: Lots of Inking

Something cool (and perhaps creepy) about today's progress is that it required me to go to my folder of 2010's Daily Sketches and find the design I settled on for Duke's sword. The file number? 026. January 26th 2010. See? Creepy-cool.

Thankfully I had a lot of time to kill after work today and used it to get caught up on this week's artwork since I felt that I was rather behind with it. Not only am I almost done inking, but I even got the design for the door figured out. I remembered today why I love my cork-backed drafting ruler so much besides as a whacking tool. Such pretty lines it helps me make.

I feel like something is off about the sheath, which is why I didn't ink it. I can look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow. I also held off on inking the pattern on the door because drawing it was tedious enough for one day, thanks.

Week 4 - Progress 3: Matter of Perspective

Was originally planning to just get the background mapped out, but decided that since I'm rather behind I could afford to start filling in some clothing and other details as well. Hopefully tomorrow I'll finish the sketch stage and at least start on inking it.

Music: Various. What? I'm tired.

Week 04 - Progress 02: Real Start

Okay, this is better, though I can already tell that this one will be a real doozey. I'm going to be using perspective, one of my arch nemesis, in the background. And I need to figure out what the palace hall he's in looks like. Oh boy.

But hey, it's actually started now! The model I'm working from in my reference book is female, but hopefully that didn't carry over into Duke's build too badly? His shoulder/neck area is frustrating already, but that's always been a weak area for me.

Week 4 - Progress 1; Belated Update

I really wish I had the energy for going into something resembling explanation as to why this is late (I did do it on Saturday), what it's going to be, etc., but I don't. So here's the beginning workings of this week's drawing.

Week 3 - Completion!

Alright, so ends the third of my weekly artwork! Thanks to the feedback in the last journal, I'm much happier with his face. I hadn't realized how badly I'd messed up the generic details. Guess it's time to break out my anatomy books again. Looking at an official expression sheet also helped a great deal. Unfortunately, it was a bit late in the drawing for me to alter the location of his eyes without re-doing a great deal.

This is the longest I've spent on a weekly drawing thus far, and made it just in time. Driving to Mom's tomorrow and I don't think I'll feel like drawing when I arrive, since I seldom do. And Saturday... well, that's Week 4! Let's see what craziness I concoct this time. Hopefully something with original characters.

Music: None, but I was watching "Second Hand Lions", which is amazing.

Week 3 - Progress 5: Almost There

So I am incredibly close to finishing this thing, but decided to stop for the day. Why? Because somehow, Flynn's face just won't cooperate. It seems... off somehow, and I don't think it's the nose (joke from the movie). Any feedback on that would be wonderful, even if it's just a quick Google Image search for Flynn Rider and comparing my drawing to the results. If I did it, I doubt it would help since I'm artistically "tunnel visioned" at the moment.

Also, I'll be upping the contrast a LOT before it's done; just decided to leave it lighter for now so the details are easier to see.

Something else I'm wondering about is indicating the shadows being cast by the bars but... I really don't want to.

Week 3 - Progress 4; ...No, Really

I just realized that I labeled yesterday as Progress 4 instead of 3. Oops. Ah well.

Today I didn't get much done. Wasn't in the mood this morning, and my afternoon and evening proved to be incredibly busy. There's a slim chance I'll work on it more tonight, but I'll post just in case.

Well... he has skin and his shirts now. I've actually usually drawn the facial features before shading (on a different layer), but ended up doing it differently. It might work better this way. I am also proud to say that I didn't touch the background.

Music: None, didn't work that long

Week 3 - Progress 4; Das Fenster

That stupid window took a lot longer than I planned, probably because today my computer decided that it didn't want to run Photoshop and Rhapsody at the same time. Some days it does, but this was not one of them. And then I went back and obsessed over the stones a bit, too.

Because the program would slow down every time I drew a line even without my music player going, I decided to stop after finishing Flynn's outline. The frustration wasn't worth it.

I should be starting work tomorrow, so chances are that updates will be slower and less productive.

Das Fenster = the window

Week 3 - Progress 2; Talking to a Brick Wall

Another tedious background, but it was still easier than the tool-chest I did during Week 1. And have I mentioned that I love the dodge and burn brushes? Well I do, for massive objects like that. Smaller things I have other, more concentrated methods for.

Tomorrow I'll probably do the window AND start on Flynn, since this one has a fairly simple background. Also, the digital art every-other-week probably won't be a pattern; it's just happened that way so far.

Going to start studying German from my book since I'm not in any classes this semester. I'm already horribly rusty after just three weeks...

Week 3 - Progress 1; Base Lines

So here we are already at Week 3. It arrived much more quickly than I expected. Thankfully, however, I was ready for it by yesterday evening. I decided to go with some "Tangled" fanart, but to avoid the couple theme for now since I think listening to mushy music every day last week was quite enough, thank you.

It's not apparent yet, but that's Flynn Rider. The prison part is probably obvious, however. I think it's also relatively spoiler-free. A big part of the movie was spoiled for me thank to fan art I saw on DeviantArt and I was NOT a happy camper.

Already the stones are giving me grief. I may need to merge their outline down with the background color to make smudging them work better.

Music: None, this didn't take long enough

DeviantArt Favorites Showcase #2

Since I didn't post this yesterday, I'll do it today while I try to figure out what in the world I'm even starting tomorrow. Still not sure. "Tangled" fan art is a possibility, though I'd been hoping to do original characters again. Anyway, onto the showcase.

Feel the Holiday Love by Rynnay
I've been following this artist for a while. Her style, great illustration of emotion, and dedication to her own characters is really inspiring to me. These three are my favorites of her characters, and it's been a while between this and her last drawing of them.

Eve and Cain by Tazi-san
Tazi isn't just a great friend, she is an awesome artist. She has a lot of great, interesting original characters and a lot of concept artwork for a Bible manga of sorts. This is a great example of her character conceptualizing.

Alone by Altamatox
A friend showed me this person's gallery last summer. Yet another artist with a great style whose work with her OCs inspires me.

Black Dress by Blithegirl
A great reminder of how elegant black can be~

Avataaaaaaaarrrr by ktshy
This lady has an awesome sense of humor and does a comic called "Shrub Monkeys" that I recommend browsing her DA for. Also, this piece of very not-typical Avatar (James Cameron) art is both hilarious and adorable.

Guinea Pig or Two Birds by rogelead
This one's from an artist I don't watch but happened across through the Daily Deviation given to the drawing. One of few prints that I would actually buy.

Week 2 - Progress 5; Completion!

Alright, there we go! All done, and I must say, I'm once again pleased with it. I'll admit that some of the contrast with the shadows and highlights was added with a photo program, but that aside it's all marker and colored pencils (Prismacolors and Copics for those who want to know).

You know, I love plaid as a pattern but I remembered how much I hate putting it on paper in the midst of this. What was Hidakez thinking when he/she designed those things? Clearly not how big a pain it is to draw them with the stripes actually following the folds and contours (all the official art I see ignores that).

But whatever. I finished something traditional that actually has a background for the first time in forever. I don't know how it'll do in the contest, but to be honest I'm not all that concerned with how I place. I like it and that's the important part.

Music: "Tangled" soundtrack; "I See the Light", various songs from my "Mush" playlist.

Week 2 - Progress 4; Background

As expected, Week 2 is taking longer than Week 1, and I'm fully okay with that. I'd hate to think every week's drawing would only take me four days. That would be boring. This time I stopped myself before getting to the figures again to keep a good pace. Often when I color by hand I eventually get bored and my work turns noticeably sloppy. I also usually start with the figures and work my way to the background, so perhaps changing that up will improve the quality over-all.

I think the texture on the tree and grass added a lot, really, though I realized while coloring that I have no idea where the light source will be. This is going to be a problem tomorrow when I start on the figures and shade the tree and grass accordingly. From behind Belle, maybe? All I know is that I really don't feel like putting them in shade. Guess I should have thought of that before sticking them under a tree.

Also, as promised, the Faberge egg I was working on, being displayed by my Ball Joint Doll, Logan.

Week 2 - Progress 3; Ink

I decided to go ahead and upload just the line art for comparison's sake, even though inking rarely takes me very long. However, there will be textures and patterns that aren't apparent with just the outlines done. The tree will have texture to it, as will the grass, and parts of their uniforms will be plaid (not my idea, just the way they're designed). Also, the sky will have clouds, but those will be added with paint on top of the marker or something similar.

I do like it a lot more than when I first started, I'll say that. Re-positioning Ludwig probably helped. Also, as Kessie mentioned in her comment on the last entry, I don't think I'll be adding anything to the top. I did sketch in some branches, but they didn't feel right. If the clouds don't take care of the empty space, I'll just crop it.

Ran some errands today. On foot. I'm tired, but at least it wasn't very cold out and the weather was beautiful. It's been a while since I did much walking, however, so I'm sure my legs will be reminding of that tomorrow.

Also, one of my Faberge eggs is almost done. Will probably add a photo in the next entry.

Music: None, inking doesn't take long enough for me to need it.

Week 2 - Progress 2; Almost from Scratch

I think this is a good example of why I have a record of not finishing very many pictures. You'll notice that I've almost entirely re-done Ludwig (the boy). And not just once, mind you. I re-drew the previous pose a good four times before changing it altogether. Just as well. The picture has more balance this way.

Also, as Kessie pointed out, it does look like Belle (the girl) has a tail. It's actually supposed to be the tree's root. I re-positioned it, but I think it still looks like a tail. Maybe after it's colored it won't so much. It also doesn't match up with the bottom of her skirt anymore.

It's safe to say that this one's going to take longer than last week's.

In other new, one of my two Faberge eggs is getting closer to done. I've started on the pattern itself. The lines aren't as neat as I'd like, but the thing's probably only an inch tall. There will be photos eventually.

Music: None, exactly. Was watching "Taken" with a friend while drawing. Heck yeah, Liam Neeson.

Week 2 - Progress 1; Awkward

This week's is not only going to be traditional media, but also fan art. I've just started and already it's proving difficult. It seems that I fare better on paper nowadays if it's a one-time shot finishing it all in one go, or just having the sketch stage be the completion. However, I think being able to look at this with new eyes every day until it's finished will help the quality a lot and prevent some artistic "tunnel vision".

Specifically, it's an entry for a club contest on DeviantArt. A Hetalia club. The character are Ludwig and Bel, and the theme, aside from the couple itself, is to draw them in their school uniforms from the Gankuen Hetalia game.

Even though I can't use layers on paper, I decided to once again do the boring part first - the background. I may not be able to ink and color before finishing the subjects and the foreground, but I can at least get it penciled in.

Thankfully I have another side-project to work on that will allow me to keep my hands off this until tomorrow. I'm working on some miniature Faberge eggs for a friend and I.

Music: Celine Dion, "All the Way" album; various mush from my play list.

DeviantArt Favorites Showcase #1

Since I already finished my artwork for this week and am therefore bored out of my skull (which calls for a trip to the library later), I thought I'd show off some of the works by other artists that I'm rather fond of.

Anubis, Lord of the Dead by Evolvana

I took a trip to Egypt a few years ago, and while I by no means embrace the mythology as truth, it sure is interesting. More like a legendary work of fiction as far as I'm concerned, with Anubis and Bastet as my favorite characters.

The Pianist by Phobs
I love this movie, and this artist really did it justice.

APH - Yes, My Lady by alatherna
Yes, I'm a Hetalia fan. But whether you're into anime or not, there's no denying that this drawing is absolutely beautiful.

My Neighbor Totoro Bottle 2 by egyptianruin
I love miniatures and I love Totoro (my first anime!), so it goes without saying that I love this, too.

A time to begin by Kaourika
A close friend of mine who inspires me a lot, especially to be brave enough to work on my tablet. She's awesome.

OVERFLOW by Yukikolein

Just... I don't know man. This one strikes me as really interesting.

That's it for this showcase! Unless I think of something worthwhile to ramble about tomorrow maybe I'll take a posting break.

Week 1, Progress 4: Completion!

Yes! It's finally done! I didn't finish last night in fact. Decided my sanity was more important. But it's done now! I'm pretty happy with it at the moment. Give it a month or so and I won't be, but such is life.

And yes, Kessie, that is a cigarette she has as you can see now. I think I've drawn her without one maybe a total of three times. That's just the way Bit rolls.

To see it larger and more defined (if you dare), go see the DeviantArt version:

I spent a while this morning finding other blogs to follow. It was... oddly entertaining.

Week 1 - Progress 3; Home Stretch

There's a pretty good chance that I'll finish this today, but all the same I wanted to show how much I've done since finishing the tool cabinet yesterday. I think it can be attributed to the fact that I like drawing figures a lot more than I do backgrounds.

Yes, Bit is purple. Yes, her dreadlocks are BRIGHT red. She's half alien, you know. Something I've noticed however is that her um... chest area... is lop-sided and too large even for her. Will be fixing that.

By the way, my water pipes froze last night. Whoops.

Music: Evanescence; "Fallen" Album*

*Note: Almost none of Evanescence's songs suit Bit's personality. It is, however, something that might be playing on the radio at her work. Also, since her setting is futuristic, Evanescence is considered "Oldies".

Week 1, Progress 2: I Hate Furniture

Let me first give a congratulations to two of my closest friends who had their first child today! An adorable baby boy!

As for the artwork itself, I am SO glad to be done with that stupid probably-a-tool-chest. It was a bigger pain than the car engine and more redundant. Splatting grease and oil stains all over it was vengeful fun. I was considering starting on the character herself today, but as slow as Photoshop was running, I decided to save it for tomorrow. That's going to be the fun part!

Also, after working on this yesterday I finished a drawing that I've had sitting around since mid-December. Traditional media, and fan art:

By the way, don't get spoiled on these frequent updates. Once school (and for me, work) starts back up, I'll have less time for art. A week should still be enough to finish a drawing, however.

Music: Metallica; The Black Album, Shrek Soundtrack, burned CD with various artists

Week 1 - Progress 1; Das Auto

So here it is, my first real art blog. I confess to being a bit nervous about it, but there's no real reason. After all, I post stuff on DeviantArt which is just as accessible to the public as this website, perhaps even more so. I also have to keep reminding myself that it is not imperative that I finish this entire drawing in one. To keep myself from doing that and rushing through the rest, here's my first progress shot.

This first one, being done in Photoshop Elements 5.0, is of one of my own characters, Bit. I decided last year that she was a mechanic. Unfortunately, this means attempting to draw my bane - mechanical details. I was sorely tempted to go out to my car, stand at the appropriate angle, snap a photo, import it into the file, and trace over it. In the end I'm glad I didn't. It probably doesn't look like any car engine in existence, but that's okay. It was a healthy exercise. And yes, I blurred it on purpose. I'll be doing that with the background, too.

Music: Kitaro; "Best of Kitaro", Aerosmith; "Janie's Got a Gun", Rhianna; "Disturbia"
