Week 12 Is Too Tired for More

So there you have it. One very angry female alien mechanic who is ready to impale someone with that odd-looking wrench. Maybe some rich idiot is mistreating the car she just spent several hours repairing. I think I let myself be too carried away by her arm muscles and shoulders but there's another lesson learned. Also that dreadlocks are terrible to ink digitally. I'm willing to bet that took the longest.

I went ahead and finished today because tomorrow starts fun weekend times and there's no way I'm going to want to work on this.

Week 12 Gets Some Color in its Cheeks

Her forehead is still huge but her face makes more sense now. While working on it I also realized that her hands were kind of odd so I fixed those as well. Her hand with the wrench is at an odd position, however, but I'll fix that later. Apparently the background can't stay gray because there's so many cool colors already, but I'm short on alternative ideas. Sure not doing her workshop. Too much work.

Week 12 Is One of Those Delay Fish

No, of course I don't want Pixar movies on a regular basis. Whatever gave you that idea?

Inking this was far more labor-intensive than expected, mostly because of her dreadlocks. Her face looks completely off and wrong but I'll fix it tomorrow. I think her facial features are too low, too small, and somehow not "her" enough.

Week 12 Lags

I had grand plans for Week 12 but they weren't cooperating. It's just as well I suppose. It's not Spring Break anymore so I no longer have an abundance of free time. So instead of an amusing idea given to me by friends on Twitter, it's going to be a simple picture of Bit... again. I don't feel like the character turn chart showed her shape that much, so that's what this is for. Simple but do-able at least with the papers I need to write.

And for the record these papers aren't due for a good month at least so I'm not procrastinating.

Week 11's Big Finale

This background is not nearly as exciting as I had planned on, but after all the detail I put into the characters I think that's okay.

...I'm hungry.

Week 11 Trudges On

Calhoun's armor was indeed a pain and I'm still not happy with it but that's an issue for tomorrow. I've finally decided to put them in a sort of jungle, mostly because any sort of grey background would just be redundant. I'm also not putting the detail on Bunny's arm cover because I need to finish this thing eventually. I did fix his fur though.

Week 11 Hops Ahead

This looks considerably more finished than it did when I updated yesterday. I actually inked most of Bunny yesterday after posting the blog entry. I decided to make use of my last day of Spring Break by spending a good long while on this. I imagine I'll be too exhausted after work tomorrow to touch it. On the plus side I have until Thursday and should be done long before that.

Week 11 Steps It Up

These entry titles mean absolutely nothing. Also I just watched Rise of the Guardians with a friend. It her first time watching it and my third. Right now I'm questioning my sanity for deliberately drawing a character with armor.

Week 11 Is Ready for Action

Last winter the "big two" of animated movies each gave us something wonderful. Disney gave us "Wreck-It Ralph" and Dreamworks released "Rise of the Guardians". I decided to celebrate their awesomeness by drawing my favorite character from each; Calhoun from Wreck-It and Bunny from Rise.

Last night I did some warm-up sketches of them but decided not to post them until I had an actual progress image.

Week 10 Is Done Enough

When I sat down to finish the drawing this morning it became clear that the direction it was going wasn't working for me. Thus, well-caffeinated and part way through my Lord of the Rings marathon, I grabbed my sketchbook and started attempt #4. It was slow going but actually worked this time! I decided not to press my luck with coloring though, so this will do.

Ivan is a very, very large man and Sebastian is a small boy.

Week 10 Is Taking It Easy

It's not a complex drawing by any means, but I'm still taking my own sweet time about finishing it. I would actually like to have it done by tomorrow night, so we'll see what happens.

Interestingly, I've been working on a father-child drawing the week of my dad's birthday, which is today.

Week 10 Slept In

And as far as I'm concerned, Week 10 earned that extra sleep. I just dealt with the week of midterms and am looking forward to Spring break. Besides that I tried this drawing three times on paper before giving up and going with SAI. The last one was traditional media anyway so I might as well.

Also because of midterms, Week 10 is going to be sweet and simple. I'm going with a relaxing, comforting Father-And-Child image.
As for my painting, the professor suggested that the ax on the table was a little too obvious, and that instead having blood on the figure's hands would engage the viewer more. Also it saves me the trouble of trying to accurately represent a shiny metal surface so I'm fine with it.

Lastly for this entry, my latest printmaking assignment. Make no mistake that this class is still the ultimate low of my semester and the bane of my existence, but I'm doing what I can to stay a few steps ahead with it. I work outside of class a lot because when the instructor is around she's over-bearing and frustrating.

This is a copper-plate intalgio with lace used to make the background pattern.

Week 9 Is Looking Fine and Finished

Here she is in all of her semi-armless glory! It's common on character turn sheets for the side-views to be shown without the arm so that other details can be seen. I know, it looks really weird.

Also, I'm pleased with the progress on my Crime and Punishment painting. The lighting is cooperating beautiful and his skin looks consistent and smooth. There's still a lot to be done on the table items and his shirt but that shouldn't take too long. My class has an in-progress critique on Wednesday.

Week 9 Leaps Ahead

I apologize for not updating more recently since I started this. I haven't touched it much and have no intention of coloring it, so it's nearly done already. Mostly I'm just correcting my several inking mistakes. Originally I thought of adding larger images of her face, but decided those would be better saved for their own drawing.

Doing a turn-around of a character and keeping everything the same size and in the same place isn't easy.

Week 9 Trips Into Action

This was actually started on Wednesday but I have yet to scan it, so I opted to take a photo before I added to it. The idea is to do a character turn-around chart as practice, since my ideal job would involve character design. My victim for this one is my purple-skinned alien Bit, whom I haven't drawn in a while.
The painting of Raskolnikov is also coming along well. I have a feeling it will turn out to be a strong piece, but I'm also waiting to be proven wrong.
