Week 8: "Can't Control the Curse"

I was too restless to draw yesterday, so this morning I bought some groceries and spent most of a gift card at the local used book store to cure my cabin fever. When I came home, I'd finally settled down enough to finish my drawing. Blasting the Frozen soundtrack in the car the entire morning was also helpful.

This character that I often role play and write for Hetalia, and "alternate" version of Canada, reminds me a lot of Elsa from Frozen. He seems cold and unfeeling, but that's because he's afraid. Unlike Elsa, however, his fear is more for himself than someone else. He spent a lot of his life being hurt, and the chances are high of it happening again. Plus there's that whole being Canada thing so I'm sure the cold doesn't bother him.

Since they remind me of each other, I decided on a "what if" scenario of him having the same ice power as Elsa. I imagine it wouldn't go much better for him than it did her.

Week 8 Pulls Itself Together

At last I forced myself to settle down and at least finish the sketching process. I'm not going to ink it because I feel like the sketch lines are better for emotional representation. But I am going to throw some digital color on it and maybe figure out how to draw ice.

See, I've noticed a lot of parallels between how I write this character and Elsa from Disney's latest animated feature "Frozen". So I figured if he had some sort of ice powers, he'd be in much the same boat as her. Poor things.

Week 8 Wants to Stay in Bed

I'm still not operating at 100% after returning from my trip, and I've been home for almost a week. I can't explain it or fix it, so I'm just rolling with it and trying to fall back into routine in hopes that my body and brain get the hint.

One of the things I really can't seem to focus on is drawing when it requires me to get past the sketching phase. But I am trying, darn it all, so we'll see what happens.

Week 7 is All Sketchy

As I predicted, I was too busy last week to do a finished drawing, but plenty of sketching happened. This is all fine with me. Relaxing and letting the creativity flow as it will is fun. Plus the person I was visiting was a big influence on all of my sketches. She's a dear friend and I already miss hanging out with her.

Now, My Neighbor Totoro is an old childhood favorite of mine, and I love to share it with people. She loves movies and anime too, so we watched it together and had a grand time! She kept comparing characters to our favorite Hetalia characters, which made it even more fun. The result was this pen doodle of Totoro and his two little buddies as Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus (right to left).

This one's inspired by the role-plays I do with the same friend. Her character is very motherly, and my characters tend to need a mother figure a lot. That's about all I have to say about that one.

And lastly, one I did after I came home. My friend and I love to watch Bob's Burgers together, and we're pretty much Tina and Louise so this is us dressed as them. We're practically sisters (they're blood sisters), she's loud and plotting and maniacal like Louise. I'm awkward and nerdy with a deep voice like Tina... and also butts.

Week 6: Crazy Love

It's the name of a song that seems to fit them, and one that Jensen Ackles (an actor that I adore) did a cover of that's just too adorable. I wanna smooch him while he sings it.

I'm impressed that I had the energy and drive to finish this today, what with last minute packing and excitement. Now I don't even have to worry about sketching until Wednesday if I don't want to.

Week 6.2

After posting the start of this yesterday I made a noteworthy amount of progress between then and going to bed. Then I ignored it most of the day and picked up inking it again around 7 or so. Hange's (the woman) mouth took me more tries than I can to remember.

Once again I'll bring up my trip that starts on Friday, which I will finish getting ready for tomorrow and might eat into my drawing time. Still, with a couple hours of airport layover ahead of me there's a strong chance I'll finish it by Wednesday.

Week 6 Happens to be Seasonal

So after drawing a new character last week, Zoe Hange of "Attack on Titan", this week I ended up wanting to draw her again, but with the guy I think she should be with Corporal Levi. It also happens to be close to Valentine's day so I guess it all works out.

Digital this time because I was feeling the tablet vibe. Sometimes I have to draw traditionally because it doesn't work out. Seeing as at the end of this week I will be in an airport or airplane for a few hours and without my scanner, digital just makes more sense. Wherever I go, the laptop goes.

Yes, clothing will be involved and yes, Levi is super short. It's a romantic-ish joke.

Week 5 KISS-es Again

Every time I sat down to get serious about this week's drawing, something did not flow. Three scrapped papers and countless attempts later, I decided to use the Keep It Simple, Stupid method again and just let the drawing do what it liked. Apparently what it liked was for me to do a simple profile sketch of this character because her nose is awesome.

Once I loosened up and stopped stressing about an awesome pose or some sort of background, this turned out to be fun and relaxing. There's actually a distinct possibility of me trying another drawing with her in it for Week 6. We'll see.
