Titles Are Over-Rated, Right?

Ah yes now I remember one reason that running a blog was a hassle. Titles are a great weakness of mine. I draw, I write, I create, but I cannot for the life of me title things well. Almost every story I have in my mind that I want to tell has absolutely nothing resembling even a working title.

But I think you're all entitled (thank you) to some actual artwork. So here's a few miscellaneous things I did over the past year. Very few, actually, because most things were based on one of two fandoms. These kinda fell in between.

This first batch is some computer game characters re-imagined. More specifically they're (some of) the characters from the hit indie game Five Nights at Freddy's. Pictured are Bonnie, Chica, and Freddy Fazbear. I did not get around to Foxy but he was just going to be a huge fox beast of some sort. Maybe eventually... But if it makes him feel any better only Bonnie got the color treatment.

The other is also related to animals but actually as animals. A friend of mine really loves Zootopia, so I drew him the main characters for his birthday. He was thrilled and I'm pleased with how they turned out. I haven't drawn many animal characters in the last few years so I've fallen out of practice.

Even though it's been over seven months since the above drawing, I am trying to get back into drawing cartoon animals. We'll see how that goes.

Week 51: Lost and Found

A few days ago I lost myself, and spent the days between then and now missing myself. But it all worked out because I found me again last night though sketching, chatting with friends, watching A Supernatural Christmas special, and playing Guild Wars. Good thing too, I was just about to put up "missing" posters.

So the product of pulling myself out of an everything block, some pen and ink sketches of anime characters:

Week 7 is All Sketchy

As I predicted, I was too busy last week to do a finished drawing, but plenty of sketching happened. This is all fine with me. Relaxing and letting the creativity flow as it will is fun. Plus the person I was visiting was a big influence on all of my sketches. She's a dear friend and I already miss hanging out with her.

Now, My Neighbor Totoro is an old childhood favorite of mine, and I love to share it with people. She loves movies and anime too, so we watched it together and had a grand time! She kept comparing characters to our favorite Hetalia characters, which made it even more fun. The result was this pen doodle of Totoro and his two little buddies as Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus (right to left).

This one's inspired by the role-plays I do with the same friend. Her character is very motherly, and my characters tend to need a mother figure a lot. That's about all I have to say about that one.

And lastly, one I did after I came home. My friend and I love to watch Bob's Burgers together, and we're pretty much Tina and Louise so this is us dressed as them. We're practically sisters (they're blood sisters), she's loud and plotting and maniacal like Louise. I'm awkward and nerdy with a deep voice like Tina... and also butts.

Week 15 With A Side of Ed

I've actually decided not to do the other wall view for the living cubicle since finals loom ever nearer and my free time is noticeably decreasing. I will, however, be doing a separate labeled and colored version of this drawing.

To keep things interesting, here's a ten-minute sketch I did of Ed from "Ed, Edd, and Eddy" to help me loosen up before drawing some other things.

Weeks 23 and 24 Didn't Really Happen

And since they didn't happen, here's some scribbles from the weeks between 22 and now. Life's been hectic around here, and inspiration always suffers for it, but here's hoping things will chill out and art can resume as normal. 

Week Five: Revisiting (Artistic Nudity)

This week will be for re-doing last year's Week 10, which is here . In all honestly it's a poorly executed drawing and is screaming to be revisited. My characters deserve better than that, especially considering that one of them had never been done in color before. Will the outfits be the same? That's the idea. The poses, however, won't. Here's the loose sketch from yesterday:

Yesterday in Figure Drawing we had a male model. I like drawing the curves on women, but variety is nice. This guy's also rather slim so muscle and bone structure is easier to see. His enormous beard, however, made the neck area difficult.

Week Three: Futuristic Love

It's time to move on to adding another character in the drawing, and also time to make another attempt at drawing my hermaphrodite alien, Corvus. This time, however, I'm including en's android boyfriend, Denver. He's an awkward adorable thing still adapting to his emotion software.

Corvus' species is rather shy by nature, and also rather short. Corvus is about 5'1", Denver is at least six feet since he's constructed in the image of a famous male model (in that setting anyway).

Also, some more character sketches. Seems I've forgotten how to draw my goat Kenjo. Duke turned out awesome, though.

Week Two: Sweet Completion

The only reason this is being updated now instead of several hours ago was that both my lighter green markers went completely dry and a perilous drive to Michael's had to be made through the snow to spend about thirty seconds finishing filling in the background. Whining aside, however, it was worth it.

This is going to be the last of the semi-Art Nouveau backgrounds for a while. They're fun, but there needs to be a bit of variety. Possibly also the last fancy dress for a bit. My next two ideas don't really call for either of those anyway. Also, here's some sketches of a few of my characters done during class on Friday.

Also, great computer news! My new battery for the "dinosaur" (named Marvin) came in, and it turns out that replacing the RAM cards with some that hold more should fix the crashing issues. Said replacements have been ordered and should be here next week, so there will be digital art this year after all!

Week Two: Stripey

While minty green with dark green was a tempting route for the dress, a more subdued color was just a wiser choice. The background will have the greens and some yellow to help balance it. It'll also be similar to last weeks with symmetrical shapes, though not the same ones.

Carrying On

It's true there were minimal updates with the progress of this painting, but at long last it's finished and ready to show to the world in completed glory. Accompanying it is a photo of the set-up, though keep in mind that it had to be taken down at the end of each class and re-assembled at the beginning of the next. That's why the backdrop fabric was more or less totally filled in on day one.

Also joining us again is the outcome of art-therapy. There was no counseling session last which, which was why none have been uploaded in a bit. This one's far less representational than the others, but still satisfying. It's called "Instrumental A Capella".


Next up is the first of a set of commission sketches that being done for a friend, as payback for her helping me out so much. They'll all be Hetalia related, but not all will be posted. This one is of "Denmark" and "Australia", whom she considers good drinking buddies. They were fun to draw and hey, Denmark gave Australia the Sydney Opera House.
Last up is something more for myself, and again, Hetalia-related. It's "Germany", but for an alternate setting Role Play with a friend where the character is female and the body guard for a Mafia Don's son. She normally tries to appear male, however, for a variety of reasons. One of those is that more people take her seriously on the job.

Oh, Hi There Midterms

That's right, it's midterm week at my school, but compared to many students my load isn't that horrible. I only have two classes with the traditional sort of "exam", though I did have to have a frame for my last painting constructed by yesterday. I would gladly trade that process for a written test any day. I am not eager to do it three more times by the semester's end.

Now that the complaining is out of the way, here's the start of my next painting assignment. It's actually had a good deal done to it since this photo was taken, but I was side-tracked yesterday after class and forgot to take one.
This time the assignment was to bring items from home, which had to include some form of background fabric, one reflective object, some perishable good (fruit, vegetable, plant, etc.), and one small, one medium, and one large object. The still life has to be removed at the end of each class and then re-positioned at the start of the next. Yes, that's as big a pain as it sounds like, and also the reason I don't have a photo of the set-up; it's not allowed.

What I have is a purple cloak as the background, a glass red, shiny tub as my reflective, and though it's not in the picture yet, my perishable item is a lemon. Also in the painting are a stuffed Care Bear sheep that I've had since I was little, a candle, an upside-down flashlight, and a wall-hanging cameo of a girl (which I set in the tub).

Last Friday was also another art therapy session with another unplanned outcome. I like the previous one better, but this one definitely has its strengths. I am, however, making a mental note to put my canvas paper under a stack of books next time to get the crinkles out.

The painting is coming along. According to my instructor it's turning out great, while I'm half-way between loathing and being okay with it. Thankfully as I look at it from the photo right now it's tilting more towards "okay".

And finally got around to scanning a few sketches! The first was a quick birthday sketch for my cousin because I fail and won't be able to mail her gifts to her until Friday and her birthday was earlier this week. It's her character Denver from a role-play that we're doing together.

I also tried to draw my half of the role-play, Corvus. However, I don't think I like it enough to be bothered with finishing it. Alas.
Finally just something I sketched during my lecture classes this week. Yes, more Hetalia fan art. Also some... thing I just started doodling. It starts with a random shape and I just build on it. they're kinda fun.

Stuff's Happening

Yes, it truly is. It's also not happening, which is problematic. Despite all my applications I still have no work, and therefore no work hours during the last week. This is going to make paying rent at the beginning of next month painful enough, so hopefully something will hire and start me this coming week, which is also the first week of school.

Lack of work being the case, however, some sketching was still done. I finished a couple of commissions:

I also have another commission to work on after the current one is finished. Something else I've done lately that makes using my tablet easier is watching other artists streaming live while they work. I've picked up some little tricks that make it more fun and save me some work. Sure I could have read a tutorial, but actually watching it happen does more for me. Visual learner and all that.

Dreaming in Pencil

Last night while goofing around on some vintage clothing websites to find things some of the characters I write would wear, I came across something I wouldn't mind wearing. This one right here .

Now, a lot of dresses on Modcloth are just plain gaudy and awful, and I'd never have an excuse to buy that one, but being an artist means I can not only pretend, but show my imaginings on paper. After this is finished, I'll be totally satisfied. It helps, however, that I don't actually want to buy it to begin with.
