Week Fifteen: Consumed by Academics (Also, Oops)

So Week 14 was, in fact, finished on time. I even started an entry for it! But somehow forgot to finish so it's been sitting in my blog as a draft since Sunday. So here you go:

Ballet slipper just ended up fitting better. I don't know what I was thinking with the puppet.

As for Week 15, since I had a hefty art assignment to finish by yesterday, all of my conceptual efforts went into that rather than something separate. The good news is that this is the final assignment for Figure Drawing this year, so next week should be back to normal!

We were supposed to take inspiration from historic painters and emulate two different painting from different time periods. This was loosely based on one by Titian. It's alright, I know it's not great. The other one on the other hand...

Turned out pretty well. It's inspired by one of Ingres, and while the over-all mood is different than the original it at least looks nice on its own.

Week Thirteen: All Together (Artistic Nudity)

Despite uncertainties about finishing this commission about half way through the week it is, in fact, finished within seven days of when it was started. Since I didn't update during that time, you'll have to take my word for it. I'm really eager to draw something fun for myself as a reward this coming week.

Also, some fun things from my Figure Drawing class, including a page of gesture warm ups, which are between ten to thirty second poses. This is the first page I've done of them that felt like it was worth posting on the internet anywhere.

Week Ten: Is It April Yet? Artistic Nudity

March could be over already and that would be fine with me. It has been an inexplicably rough month even with Spring Break. At the very least my goal of finishing my second commission by April appears doable. It's just clothing and a simple background from here, and while skin is fun to color it can be difficult, especially with colored pencil.

We're onto our next project in Printmaking, which will be Intaglio. Trust me when I say Wikipedia could explain it better. At the very least it should go more smoothly than silk screen. This is my concept so far. I was not in the best of moods.

Finally started on the third commission, and it and the fourth are for the same person. This one will only be line art, but the other will be color.
Lastly, something from Figure Drawing on Monday because there weren't any results from Wednesday worth posting. We're doing India ink now. For some reason the longer poses are less stressful for me than warming up.

Week Ten Part Two?

It's truly irksome that this semester has challenged me to a duel and is thus far winning. After making it to at least June last year with Weekly Art, however, giving up already is hardly an option. So onward we press. Hopefully April will bring something of a fresh start.

The commission is still being worked on and is finally in the color stage, which shouldn't take nearly as long as sketching it since these were new characters to me. Unfortunately working on it during my lunch break right now isn't an option because I left the picture in my scanner like the genius I am.

We've moved onto to ink media in Figure Drawing, and though I don't have photos of what we did yesterday, here's something from last week. These were done with Tombow markers, which I hadn't used in a few years. It was an experience that revealed that I need a lot more practice with faces.

And finally, a little something that kept me good and occupied all last Sunday afternoon. It's lumpy and very retro, but it was hard work and it's mine. Too big for the dollhouse, alas, but perfect for the Barbie-sized collection I have.

Anyway, since there's quite a collection of drawings from my Figure Drawing class this week, they get their own entry. It was a productive week despite some emotional setbacks. Enjoy!

Week 8: A Collection (Artistic Nudity)

I used this week to get back on track from last week, so while nothing major is finished I have certainly been busy! Here's the results of this week's Figure Drawing classes. In the next couple of days I'll post all the other art I worked on this week.

Week 8: In the Manner of... #2 (Artistic Nudity)

The image above is one of the most well-known by Mexican female painter Frida Kahlo (July 6 1907 - July 13 1954). Though I admire the works of many historic artists, this woman is my favorite not only as a painter but as a strong determined person not afraid to express herself or depict life as the harsh, sometimes ugly reality that it was for her.

While there unfortunately won't be time for me to go about my week and do a painting on canvas to attempt mimicking her style, I'll still try it by digital means. For a bit I had no idea what I could do as a tribute to this woman, but yesterday it struck me to try a portrait of her with one of the three children that she was unable to carry to term due to a horrible accident when she was in her twenties. She wanted more than anything to have children with her husband Diego Rivera, but never could. So that will be my tribute to her. The thumbnail sketch in the top right of the page below is the concept for that.

And yes, more ponies.

There was also a non-cirricular figure drawing workshop that some cousins and I went to on Saturday. It wasn't my most successful round of drawing the figure, but it was still enjoyable and good practice.

Week Seven: Progress Two (Artistic Nudity)

Isn't that an imaginative title.

Anyway, it turns out the whole thing will need to be colored digitally. Inking didn't go so well, so since there's now correction fluid on the original it would be impossible to color it traditionally and have it still look nice. But that's alright. It'll fit with the background better.

We had a young male model during class yesterday, which was quite different than the women and old man we've had so far. The musculature was interesting to do, and he took some poses from Michelangelo's works for the study. He had a very prominent brow ridge. It was neat but there wasn't really time or opportunity to draw it.

Week Six: Leaps and Bounds

This week has been pretty merciful as far as allowing time to work on this piece. The face is being saved for last along with the hair because they're my favorite thing to do. Doing them first would mean being bored with the rest.

The rest, however, is turning out well! It's been really fun.

More progress has finally been made in Printmaking. The prints have one more block of color going on them, which will be done next week. And unless the internet was lying to me, the Russian means "Sunrise".
Also, some exercises from Figure Drawing. The actual drawings exercises didn't turn out well at all, but these were cool. The idea was to work starting with the darks as guidelines and working up to lights.

Week Six: Finally Starting (Artistic Nudity)

Well, technically it's not that late, since last week's wasn't started until Monday either. Maybe Monday should be Day 1 from now on. But this week is digital again because toting my markers and colored pencils all over is hardly convenient. There's also the possibility of working on a digital piece at work and during my lunch break, since the computer comes with me everywhere.

Anyway, a number of factors led to the decision for this week to be a sort of pinup of an usual variety. The character will be a heavier woman (obviously) and wearing something does, in fact, leave a decent amount to the imagination. Part of the inspiration is likely the model from yesterday's Figure Drawing class. She's not built like the woman in my drawing, but her curves were still a lot of fun to do.

Week Five: Whoops (Artistic Nudity)

So while the week's been effectively kicking my ass, some progress has been made on the drawing. I finished inking it just a few minutes ago, but this picture was obviously taken before then. I'm at my cousin's this weekend and couldn't be bothered to figure out the scanner at all. I also doubt there will be much of a background on this, but if I get the characters colored at least I won't sweat it too much.

Figure Drawing on Wednesday was fun and effective. We spent a good deal of class having the model pose like each of the Three Graces from one of Botticelli's paintings, and then took a shot at a portrait afterwards. I liked the outcomes of both enough to share them here.
