Week 12: Mission Complete

This would have been finished a lot sooner if my tablet had chosen to behave. Instead it lost pressure sensitivity again, and the only way to make it work is to restart my computer. Sigh. Anyway, these are highly simplified but they're done and look better than my last try.

Week 12.2

This is going a lot more smoothly than I expected, and again I'm ahead of schedule. It feels awesome. At this rate I could be finished by Monday. Gosh Jean is pretty.

Week 12: Re-do and Two for One

Several months ago I did this drawing and... still don't like it. So I thought I would try the cross over idea again, but better and in color. I made one attempt of both characters together doing the Attack On Titan military salute, but it wasn't working. So instead I'm doing two separate action pose drawings of the main characters from Spriggan in the uniforms/gear.

Yes it does turn out that Yu Ominae (Spriggan) looks a lot like Eren Jaeger (Attack on Titan). It's the typical anime hero look.
Interestingly enough, both anime have a character named Jean in them. Jean of Spriggan, however, is a lot more mature and has it together. Of course, he's also an experienced soldier and has a good ten years on the kid in Attack on Titan.

Week 29 Is Gonna Stab Some Things

There may come a week that I dedicate to coloring this, but it's not this week. Right now I'm just glad that there's some contrast and the weapons are finished... ish. Now to figure out Week 30.

Week 29.4...ish

So this drawing may be divided into two weeks - one week to draw, ink, and tone it, and another to color. Maybe. I grew bored with it, which is why there were no updates the last few days. Since I started last Monday I'm giving myself until tomorrow evening to finish it so we'll see where I'm at by then. At least both the characters are done - I consider that much impressive.

Week 29.3

I made myself sit down and finish drawing/inking the angry guy on the right today. Those boxy parts of their gear are going to be my breaking point, I can see it already. I wonder how the manga artist manages to draw them so much...

Week 29.2

This one's going to take too long for me to make a silly joke in every title, so I'll spare you all for this one.

The guy on the left has a pose that makes more sense now. All the straps on the gear haven't been too difficult to draw, but the actual machinery won't be fun. Oh well. One day at a time.

Week 29: Two Cool Things for the Price of One!

The static poses and bland backgrounds I've been doing are starting to bore me. So I decided to try and do the opposite of that this week, and to also motivate myself by combining two things I enjoy. I recently watched all of what's released of an anime called Shingeki no Kyoujin (Or "Attack on Titan if your Japanese-illiterate like me). The characters wear this awesome gear to help them kill giants (AKA "Titans") and I thought two of the main characters from Spriggan would look pretty cool in it.

Here's some screenshots of the gear:

My drawing is really rough right now because when I started it my hands were shaking. I'm not really sure why, but since I was actually feeling motivated to draw I decided to go ahead and get the under-sketch done anyway. I know the anatomy on the blue guy is weird. I will fix that.

Week 8 Is Dog Tired

Actually I'm not especially tired right now, nor am I tired of working on this but I ran out of bad dog jokes. I'm content with it and thus shall leave it as is. It's not meant to be perfect, just fun.

Also I've started my next painting. It's inspired by Crime and Punishment and will depict some symbolism Rodion Romanavich's inner conflict.

Week 8 Is Having A Dog-Gone Good Time

These titles really are growing steadily worse this week.

It would have been easy to finish this today, but since I'm ahead I might as well pace myself. The anatomy on the wolves could likely stand to be better, but I'm doing this for fun and relaxation so it's not going to bother me much.

Week 8's Three Dog Night

And the awful dog puns continue. It took forever for me to feel like working on this today but it was mercifully quick work once I did. All this leaves is figuring out the color of Jean's shirt and adding in highlights and shadows. His shirt will likely be a dark blue, since that's the color I associate with him. I can't help it that the sky just happens to be blue as well.

Week 8 Is Working Like A Dog

Let's see how many bad dog jokes I can make until this drawing is finished.

Not much to say other than that, really. The progression is pretty obvious. Hey it's Friday tomorrow, cut me some slack.

Week 7 Conks out and Week 8 Rises

Right now I'm caught between never wanting to see this painting again and seeing where I could easily come back and fix things. Due to poor Katniss' very masculine build here my professor thought it was a commentary on gender and could be a drag show or something of that variety. This made him happy, which is good, but that's honestly not what I want. I think when I come back to it I'm going to totally re-do all the places where you can see her skin as well as her hair. I do like her dress though.

Since I had the motivation and the extra time tonight, I started Week 8. Actually I re-re-started Week 8 after trying to put it on paper twice and failing miserably. Some things just have to be digital to work for me nowadays. That and after cramming a painting into six days I think I earned some tablet drawing.

The subject matter is fan art of a character I haven't drawn in a while. He's a werewolf of sorts and to me it would be a fun quirk if he communicated with dogs (including wolves) well enough to chill out with them. The wolves are possibly way too large, but that's deliberate.

Week Seven: I See The Light

Okay, I realize it may not have been obvious before but hopefully now it is? It's Jean from Spriggan (who I write) with my friend's character Aiko reliving my favorite scene from Tangled. Toward the end GIMP didn't do what I want so I had to trace it onto clean paper so I could color it. The coloring went quite awry but thank God for digital programs.

It's not my most amazing piece, but it will pass. And from a distance it's nice to look at.

Week Seven: Progress Two (Artistic Nudity)

Isn't that an imaginative title.

Anyway, it turns out the whole thing will need to be colored digitally. Inking didn't go so well, so since there's now correction fluid on the original it would be impossible to color it traditionally and have it still look nice. But that's alright. It'll fit with the background better.

We had a young male model during class yesterday, which was quite different than the women and old man we've had so far. The musculature was interesting to do, and he took some poses from Michelangelo's works for the study. He had a very prominent brow ridge. It was neat but there wasn't really time or opportunity to draw it.

Week Seven: A Crossing of Sorts

Trying to do traditional again and it happens to be another couple on the same week as Valentine's Day. That wasn't actually planned but it works. This goes out to another Role Play partner for mine, so let's see how soon she recognizes these two.

They're dressed as Flynn and Rapunzel from "Tangled" and will be riding in a boat reenacting my absolute favorite scene; the release of the lanterns. The background will probably be digital for the sake of my sanity (and not spending a ton of money on dark markers).

Week 15: Progress 01 - Shortcut

If the background of the image above looks like a photo... that's because it is. Of course, that's not the permanent background, but I have yet to erase all the elements of what I based the image on. Namely, the photo below (of yours truly, specifically taken for this drawing).

The face in the drawing is not based on mine at all, and I gave her more curve, plus the lighting is totally different and I had to add her lower legs by eyeballing a different reference altogether. At first there was some paranoia that this was cheating, but after fussing with the camera a bit to finally get a good shot and realizing how much work there's still to do even with the traced outline, I don't feel guilty about it.

Actually, as mentioned in the last entry, her face will have some influence pulled from Queen Latifah. Also, some of her dreadlocks will be in her face, but I'm saving those for when I have more of everything else done.

Yes, that's a cigarette. I'm the original photo I have a really stubby pencil.

Background Noise: Various anime - Spriggan and Fullmetal Alchemist

Week 5 - Done At Last

As predicted in my last entry, I was indeed up until almost midnight working on this, and haven't had time to upload it until just now because it's on the big computer that I don't take to work with me. But hey, here it is in all its completed "glory". Could I have done more with it? Yes. Am I going to? No, I'm calling it good. This week was a challenge and I'm glad to wash my hands of it.

Though as far as the final product, I can't say I hate it. Photoshop improved a lot of things, and the pose of the central figures turned out well. I'll admit that some of the background leaves something to be desired, but it was the wrestling pose that I was most concerned about from the start. Way to cooperate, boys.

Also as predicted, I'm worn out after the hour and a half drive to my mom's house and would have no desire to finish this if I hadn't already. I'm not sure how this is possible after the 20 ounce coffee I had at 11:30 this morning.

Week 5 - Progress 5: Let's Get This Over With

Well a "bad week" art-wise had to come sooner or later, so it might as well be this one. I am going to finish this, even if I stay up until midnight doing it (entirely likely at this point, since it's 10 PM here). I could finish tomorrow, but I simply will not have time. So, have the almost-finished-coloring version. AKA "I am totally fixing the background with Photoshop because I wasn't expecting half my markers to be on their last leg".

The skyline was meant to be dirty and gritty, considering how big a city Tokyo is, but not "Why markers, WHY?!" kind of gritty. I've never been to Tokyo, but I was in Cairo in 2008 and the sky was indeed disgusting during daylight hours. Cities are only nice to look at once the sun's down.

I also haven't listened to music much while drawing this week. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Week 5 - Progress 4: Lined Up

Alright, despite some doubts I managed to finish drawing the background and ink the whole thing today. I can definitely say, however, that next week's drawing will be more organic in its setting. I'm getting bored of all this straight lined artificial nonsense.

I realized after reading Kessie's comment in the last entry that unless you're familiar with Spriggan (and a very limited portion of the anime fan population is) this picture makes very little sense. So, let me elaborate a little:
-It is an office, but it's in a sort of military HQ in the city. Supposedly Tokyo, but I was too lazy to look up Tokyo's skyline.
-The two characters horsing around are super-soldiers and comrades, and have a bit of a brotherly relationship. The one with the long hair (Jean) is older than the Japanese kid (Yu).
-The other two in the room are more minor characters that are not in the Spriggan movie, but do have roles in the manga. I assume they're used to this sort of behavior, hence their not really caring.
-The person who owns the office isn't there yet.

Hopefully now it makes a tiny bit more sense. I'll be sure to include those details when I upload it to DeviantArt

Music: Again, none. Was just watching Mythbusters on Netflix's website.
