Week Two: More Dresses

Inspiration for this week didn't come until about three o'clock this afternoon from a huge pile of art/photography/reference books (seen above). Even trying to sleep this morning absolutely no ideas would come. Thank God for my bad habit of collecting art books left and right and also caffeine.
So in the end we're headed for a crazy combination of my character Kat in Victorian-era clothing blowing the smoke off of a very modern handgun. The background will likely be something stylistic since last week's was so fun.

Week 21: Snapshots

I regret to inform you that this entry will not be entirely coherent. There's been a headache plaguing me off and on all day and it is currently in the "on" position.

Yesterday was not a good sketch day. I did, however, take a photo of something I want to try drawing for a Weekly Art. It's the water department building.

I'll take some artistic liberties, but it is pretty neat.

Also, my neighbors down the street have this tree. I could just sit under it for hours if the pollen wouldn't render my blind and unable to breathe for the rest of my life. I'm half tempted to ask if I can some day, even though I don't know them at all.
Also, just about done with the cake. Been layering on the varnish:

Week 20: Trudging

Another case of lost interest strikes, but at least it's close to completed this time. Since I'm currently sick of looking at it, almost done though it is, posting it and letting my mind rest for the night seemed like the best course of action. There's some touch-ups to be done, but hopefully that won't take any more than half an hour tomorrow.

Also, when I go on my walk tomorrow, I'm going to sit on a bench in the shade downtown and draw for a while. Should be relaxing and good practice. We'll see how many odd looks I get.

Week 15: Progress 01 - Shortcut

If the background of the image above looks like a photo... that's because it is. Of course, that's not the permanent background, but I have yet to erase all the elements of what I based the image on. Namely, the photo below (of yours truly, specifically taken for this drawing).

The face in the drawing is not based on mine at all, and I gave her more curve, plus the lighting is totally different and I had to add her lower legs by eyeballing a different reference altogether. At first there was some paranoia that this was cheating, but after fussing with the camera a bit to finally get a good shot and realizing how much work there's still to do even with the traced outline, I don't feel guilty about it.

Actually, as mentioned in the last entry, her face will have some influence pulled from Queen Latifah. Also, some of her dreadlocks will be in her face, but I'm saving those for when I have more of everything else done.

Yes, that's a cigarette. I'm the original photo I have a really stubby pencil.
