Week 28 Is Enough

July 12th was one of my close friends' birthday (the day after mine!) so I drew him a little gift of two of our characters hanging out. Mine is obviously Kat, the er... cat. His is Kyle the hyena. He's like her cuddly little brother.

I had plans to do something full color and all for this week, but it didn't work out. This turned out well however, so I decided it would work for this week.

Week 13 Took Some Sick Days

During the 3-ish years that I lived alone I forgot about the concept of sharing everything with whomever you live with. In this case it's my mother and she shared a cold with me that knocked me flat all weekend. Suffice to say, drawing was not on the schedule between being miserable and sleeping a lot.

It's been a while since I did anything finished of my character Kat, and since I've been redesigning her lately I decided to give it a shot. It will be inked and colored, probably tomorrow. The sad thing is that I started it last Tuesday and didn't touch it until today. Oops.

Weeks 23 and 24 Didn't Really Happen

And since they didn't happen, here's some scribbles from the weeks between 22 and now. Life's been hectic around here, and inspiration always suffers for it, but here's hoping things will chill out and art can resume as normal. 

Week 8: A Collection - Part 2

And now for the other things created this week, mainly outside of class. For starters is something in color! A gift for a friend who had her birthday on Leap Day. It's a character from a video came galled Phoenix Wright, which I know very little about. But he's a German character, hence the German phrase that more or less means "Happy Birthday".

This next one is a Work In Progress for my Printmaking I class. We're doing screen prints this time which are easy but tedious. I'm not at the actual printing phase yet, but I will be next week. This is the pre-embossing transparency of mine. Well, one of them. The idea may have subconsciously come from a Madame Butterfly poster that a friend of mine has. Never seen the play myself, but the concept of a geisha and butterflies was too interesting to pass up.

This one's not a drawing, but a creative creation all the same. I've been trying to get back into sculpting clay food, and did these donuts last Friday night. I recently bought some more sculpting supplies and found more tutorials, so hopefully more like this will be soon in coming.

And finally some crazy emotional stuff that I forced out while un-medicated last week. It kept me from going any more insane than I already was.

And with that it's time to start planning what to draw for my re-entry into Weekly Art! Looking forward to that.

Week Two: Sweet Completion

The only reason this is being updated now instead of several hours ago was that both my lighter green markers went completely dry and a perilous drive to Michael's had to be made through the snow to spend about thirty seconds finishing filling in the background. Whining aside, however, it was worth it.

This is going to be the last of the semi-Art Nouveau backgrounds for a while. They're fun, but there needs to be a bit of variety. Possibly also the last fancy dress for a bit. My next two ideas don't really call for either of those anyway. Also, here's some sketches of a few of my characters done during class on Friday.

Also, great computer news! My new battery for the "dinosaur" (named Marvin) came in, and it turns out that replacing the RAM cards with some that hold more should fix the crashing issues. Said replacements have been ordered and should be here next week, so there will be digital art this year after all!

Week Two: Stripey

While minty green with dark green was a tempting route for the dress, a more subdued color was just a wiser choice. The background will have the greens and some yellow to help balance it. It'll also be similar to last weeks with symmetrical shapes, though not the same ones.

Week Two: Man That's Small...

The gun she's holding is a Vector CP1, because the super-tiny size was an amusing idea to me. In fact, it may still be too large here - the barrels are about 4 inches long. Or were, rather. They were recalled in 2000 for safety reasons. Thanks to my Illustrated Catalog of Handguns for that information. It actually may not even be one that would have a smoking barrel to blow on, but that detail needs to stay because the artist said so.

The dress that inspired this one is actually this right here, but while the vertical stripe pattern will be interesting, a different color scheme would be a better idea since the character is herself white.

Mini Memory Lane Joy Ride

The weekend before this last one I was a guest at my brother's house while things were worked out for me to replace my new car. I ended up with a white 2000 Dodge Durango, thanks to his enthusiastic assistance, and I must say I enjoy driving it. I won't enjoy putting gas in it, but that's a complaint for another time.

My brother is busiest at his job during the summer (such is the life of kitchen staff at a country club), so while he was out I spent hours and hours reliving my childhood by playing the first Crash Bandicoot game on his PS3. I'd forgotten how simply beautiful and fun that game is, and it was influential enough to help me break my art block.

It's just a quick thing - probably took an hour tops and I didn't use a reference. But my word, it was relaxing and great fun. The next morning I also did this five-minute sketch to ensure that the breaking of artists' block wasn't a one-time deal:
Just a fast scribble as my character Kat as one of the game series' default female badicoots. The lack of a certain long, fluffy appendage is not going well with her. She probably hasn't noticed that her fur is orange yet.

Week 6 - Progress 4: Early Finish

Finishing on Wednesday instead of the last day possible felt great, I must say. The background is simple this time, but I'm so fine with that. It was therapeutic and fun, not only drawing something it, but getting to dress Kat up again. Ah costume design, how I enjoy you.

No music while finishing, but I was watching Boondock Saints II, which seemed fitting.

Week 6 - Progress 3: Still Truckin'

This isn't a late upload. I'll admit to not working on this at all yesterday. It was a long day and I had the attention span of a gnat. But today I think I made up for it. I wasn't even planning on doing this much, but since I managed to color all of the subject I think this will still be finished in a timely manner.

For the first time this year I reverted to my habit of doing all the fun stuff and then leaving myself with the dreaded background. On this, however, I think I'll just pull a few tricks with Photoshop and call it good. The point of this week was to relax and have fun, and I definitely did that.

In response to Kessie's comment on my last entry, I'm pleased that it shows which character I'm most comfortable drawing. I've been drawing Kat for ten years as of last December, so she should look rather natural, shouldn't she?

Week 6 - Progress 2: Leaps and Bounds

Okay, accomplished a lot on this thing today! I knew it'd be fun, and it totally is. Still unsure of the background, but was enjoying it too much to care today. And look, you guys get two updates in 24 hours! Just thought I should make up for not posting yesterday.

I think I was able to do a lot because instead of driving back to my place or killing time online, I was at at a game-day party at my uncle's. Since football means very little to me, I worked on this during the game and paused when commercials were on. Also had some awesome food.

And the pendant she usually wears around her neck is now a tie pin. How handy.

PS: Kessie, probably no Valentine's drawing. :P What I did for Week 2 was a drawing for a contest that ends on V-day, and I draw mushy nonsense on a regular basis anyway, I just never post it.

Week 6 - Progress 1: Gunslinger Kitty

Yes, the update is a day late, but rest assured that I did, in fact, draw this yesterday. It just was late at night by the time I scanned it. I even went through the hassle of scanning it from my mom's computer, e-mailing it to myself, and then uploading it now instead of when I get home tomorrow.

After three weeks of hassling with a lot of straight lines and a distinct lack of curves, I decided that I was going to have as much fun this week as possible. Also, I haven't drawn my main original character, Kat, yet this year. Shameful, isn't it? So I make up for that now by drawing her in a random vigilante-like outfit. Because I love vigilante movies. And yes, she will have under-arm holsters. Those things are awesome.
